Ford Mustang driven by Steve McQueen in 1968 action film, ‘Bullitt,’ on display on National Mall

This segment originally aired on Fox 5 DC on April 17, 2018.

 – One of the most recognizable vehicles in film history — the green 1968 Ford Mustang GT driven by Steve McQueen in the action masterpiece, “Bullitt” — is on display on D.C.’s National Mall.

As part of the Historic Vehicle Association’s month-long Cars at the Capital celebration, “Bullitt” has been enclosed in a glass case and will be lit up for around the clock viewing.

The car’s owner, Sean Kiernan, said the vehicle has been in his family since his father purchased it in 1974. Kiernan told FOX 5’s Kevin McCarthy that McQueen reached out to his father in 1977 in hopes of buying it from him but his father said no. “At that time he had had it for three years, put plenty of miles on it, it was their family car — I think that anybody in the same situation would say no,” Kiernan said.

The display runs from April 17 (which is also National Mustang Day!) through April 23.
