Cruisin’ the Dub

Revving up interest in collector vehicles as they raise money for a cure, A&W’s second annual Cruisin’ for a Cause Day—Canada’s largest cruise-in—raises big money to fight MS.

Since 1956 when the first A&W drive-in restaurant opened on Portage Avenue in Winnipeg, Manitoba, A&W Food Services has remained 100-percent, Canadian-owned and is now—with 713 locations coast-to-coast—one of the strongest brand names in the nation’s foodservice industry.

A&W drive-in restaurants have always been synonymous with good-times, fun, and classic cars. So in 2005, the company decided to play on that unique tradition and do some good in the process by launching a campaign that has not only been good for the historic vehicle community but also an incredibly effective fundraiser to fight multiple sclerosis—the most common neurological disease in young adults in Canada.

This year alone, “Cruising the Dub” hosted 4,400 cruise nights across the country, including a Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, cruise-in this past August that saw more than 1800 vehicles attend.

Growing in popularity since the beginning, these A&W sponsored events have inspired numerous car clubs across Canada to come out in force to show their vintage hot rods, muscle cars, and rare classic while they mingle and share stories with fellow enthusiasts and young people interested in the hobby.

Mixing charitable giving with good fun, so far in 2010 A&W estimates that over $700,000 has already been raised for MS research and support mechanisms for families trying to cope with the disease.
