Mystery Vehicle

Congratulations to Pete Johnson of Rochester Hills, MI who correctly identified this month's Mystery Vehicle as the "Boyle Special",1938 Maserati 8CTF. The Boyle Special was recently announced as the third vehicle to be added to the National Historic Vehicle Register and was honored at the 2014 Indianapolis 500.

    The car pictured is Wilbur Shaw's "Boyle Valve Special" 1938 8CTF Maserati, winner of the Indianapolis 500 in 1939 and 1940. It is the property of the Hulman Foundation and resides at the Indianapolis Speedway Hall of Fame Museum.

    It's the Mike Boyle Maserati Grand Prix car that Wilbur Shaw drove to victory in the 1939, 1940, and almost 1941 Indy 500's. The tape on the wheel is Shaw's distinctive preference.

    First of all it is NOT an Alfa Romeo, the exhaust is on the wrong side. Second of all it is not a Grand Prix car but it is close. It is the most successful race car in the history of the Indy 500 posting two firsts, two thirds and a fourth in six races. It was leading the other race after 150 laps when a wheel failed... It is a 1939 Maserati 8CTF, specifically chassis number #3032. The Boyle Special
