HVA Matters: The Year Ahead

The New Year just got started, and the Historic Vehicle Association is already on a roll. Here’s the scoop on this month’s big announcement, along with some important appearances and car show events we’ll be covering in 2014.

January’s Big Reveal

Kicking off the Washington Auto Show On January 22nd, the HVA will reveal its plans, through collaboration with the U.S. Department of Interior and The Library of Congress, to develop a permanent archive of significant historic vehicles — the National Historic Vehicle Register.

On display in Washington this month will be first vehicle to be formally documented, the prototype 1964 Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe (CSX2287) — the first Daytona Coupe built, and the prototype for five other Daytona Coupes that were subsequently constructed. HVA President Mark Gessler will be leading a press conference at the auto show to discuss the specifics of the Register, along with Richard O’Connor, Chief, Heritage Documentation Programs U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service; Peter Brock, President of BRE and original designer of the Cobra; and Fred Simeone, MD of the Simeone Foundation Museum. In addition, the HVA will present the Simeone Foundation Museum with an award for Stewardship of American Automotive Heritage for the 1964 Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe.   

 

Winter Awards

On January 12th the HVA will be presenting an award for the most well-preserved vehicle at the inaugural Arizona Concours d’Elegance at the Arizona Biltmore Resort.  

In February, the HVA will be presenting the FIVA Preservation Award for the most well-preserved vehicle at the Boca Raton Concours d’Elegance. The FIVA Preservation Award recognizes and celebrates excellence in automotive preservation and is presented to the best-preserved vehicle at a given event. Both FIVA and the HVA seek to acknowledge and celebrate these vehicles as one-of-a-kind examples of our automotive heritage, presented and shown in their unmolested, unmodified state.

March will see a return to the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance where, in 2012, the HVA launched its THIS CAR MATTERS video series. 2014 will be the third year in a row at which we will film THIS CAR MATTERS and if previous years are any indication, this year’s event is sure to play host to a number of phenomenal vehicles. In addition to filming, both the FIVA Award and THIS CAR MATTERS award for the most historically significant vehicle at the event will be presented.

Summertime Shows

With the arrival of warmer weather, the car show season will kick into high gear, and the HVA will be on hand at a number of events to present both the FIVA and THIS CAR MATTERS awards. These include:

Need For Speed

August will perhaps be one of the busier months of the year with the HVA team making its way to the Bonneville Salt Flats to film its THIS CAR MATTERS film series during the 2014 Bonneville Speed Week. Following quickly on its heels, the Monterey auto week, a virtual mecca for automotive enthusiasts, will find the HVA attending a number of events, filming and presenting both the FIVA and THIS CAR MATTERS awards.

    I hope someone will give the Allard J2 and J2X some coverage. They were important cars in their day and won many many races including the important ones like LeMans.

    why no coverage of the annual keenland concours in Lexington?? the hardback publication and range of interesting vehicles including boats, motorcycles and trucks is now several years old, has a black tie dinner before the event and mini tour of the area. Would be worth your time!

    I am doing a body off restoration of my Fathers 1960 Facel Vega HK 500, any one else done anything similar.getting close to setting the body back on.
